Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent nutritional anemia worldwide. Iron is a major constituent of hemoglobin and plays a major role in different cellular activities, and deficiency results in clear modifications in the blood. Recent studies have contributed to the understanding of iron regulation in the body, the identification of new biomarkers, and the development of new diagnostic methods. This review will focus on recent improvements and innovative strategies on iron metabolism and IDA, in particular, the biochemical and hematological aspects of iron deficiency. It will emphasize that a more comprehensive, integrated approach may be more beneficial for a diagnosis.
